IP telephony, unlike analog, allows you to communicate with different subscribers throughout the country and beyond, and you don’t need the usual cables or a telephone set. Of course, there are options for telephony via the Internet protocol, which are visually almost impossible to distinguish from regular telephone communication - in this case, there are both the classic devices and the wires.
And yet the main difference is that IP telephony communication is carried out through devices that have direct access to the Internet - computers and other gadgets (tablets, smartphones, etc.). In this article, we will tell you in detail what features virtual IP telephony has.
What is virtual IP telephony
IP telephony is one of the means of voice communication using data networks (including Internet Protocol networks). As soon as the mentioned packets reach the recipient, the signal is decoded into the original sound. This entire path is possible thanks to a huge number of additional protocols (we will consider some of them a little later in the article).

In this case, the term "data transfer protocol" means a specific language by which two subscribers can understand each other, and also ensures satisfactory quality of communication (data transfer) between points A and B.
IP telephony and virtual PBX: what is the difference
What is a virtual PBX? In simple terms, it is a telephone connection via the Internet. For this term, some use the English abbreviation PBX - Private Branch eXchange. If analog telephony requires a separate room in which the equipment will be located, then for a virtual one this is not required, since this station is located on servers in the so-called cloud. Connection to a virtual automatic telephone station is carried out using gateways, as well as special equipment and / or software.
That is, the employee (user) activates the connection via the organization's local network or via 3G/4G on his own gadget (smartphone, tablet). A virtual automatic telephone exchange not only has all the functions of a mini-PBX, but also has one significant advantage over the latter, namely, it does not require the purchase of expensive special equipment and rather complex technical equipment. Thus, you can create a call center or office anywhere on the planet, without being tied to a physical address. All this allows you to quickly and easily resolve the issue of telephony in any company.
There is another bonus - since the connection is carried out via the Internet, the user can see detailed statistics on the calls he made. After another telephone conversation, you can see detailed information about it - when and how long it lasted, how long the client waited on the line, from which number the call came and which manager answered it.
If the user wants to get more detailed information, for example, the advertising source of the call, then in this case the ideal solution would be to use a virtual PBX, which is included in the functionality of call tracking services (the so-called call tracking). The latter not only collects complete statistics on incoming calls, but also helps to determine the channels of receipt of the target audience (interested clients).
