Despite the company's enormous value, any potential acquirer would have had to make Unity completely platform-agnostic in order to maintain its market share, developer support, and influence e., Google couldn't make Unity exclusive or best-of-breed for AndroidChrome without losing hordes of developers. This doesn't mean that turning Unity into a proprietary engine would be strategically unwise. The value destroyed by such a decision and the premium required to buy Unity would likely make such a move prohibitive. However, if the goal of acquiring Unity was to secure a foundational role in the new internet, then the acquirer would instead have an incentive to keep the engine openavailable across platforms, and price could easily become irrelevant.

If Epic has a viable path to the Metaverse, Valve must do the same. Valve’s Steam outpaces the Epic Games Store in terms of users, revenue, and playtime. It’s home to several of the most popular and longest-running multiplayer games Counter-Strike, Team Fortress, DotA.
