A Brief History of Upwork
In 1998, Beerud Sheth, a graduate of MIT, and Srini Anumoli, a former Wall Street professional, founded Elance in Jersey City. They grew to 22 employees and moved to Sunnyvale, Silicon Valley, California in December 1999. The first service they offered was the Elance Small Business Marketplace.



Additionally, Stratis Karamanlakis and Odysseas Tsatalos founded oDesk 2003. While they intended it to be a staffing company, oDesk became an online marketplace where people could register and use the platform users to find and hire remote workers. oDesk and Elance merged on December 18, 2013, forming Elance-oDesk. It later became Upwork in 2015. The company didn’t just get a new name; it also got an upgrade.

From 2009 to 2014, Upwork was listed on the Inc. 5000 list. It went public on the New York Stock Exchange on April 27, 2019.

Upwork Inc. is a publicly traded company whose shares are available for sale on the stock exchange physician data . It is listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange as 'UPWK'. Thus, several individual and institutional shareholders own the company.
