Setting up wildcard subdomains
Wildcard subdomains create a placeholder subdomain under your domain name. This placeholder subdomain can then be used to map subdomains that you have not yet defined.

If you decide to use subdomains for sites in your multisite network, you must set up wildcard subdomains.
