For Beata Biel, Quiztime is about training her brain in a useful way. "I could play Sudoku, but that wouldn't allow me to acquire additional skills that I could use in my journalistic work . "


She cites, as an example, an investigation published by chile mobile database BBC Africa Eye that looked at the murder of two women and two young children by Cameroonian soldiers. By analysing footage of the scene, which the Cameroonian government described as “fake news” , the journalists established where the murder took place and who was responsible. They looked at clues such as the outline of mountains in the distance and the angle of shadows. They were helped in their investigation by a number of “detectives” on Twitter, including members of Bellingcat and regular players of Quiztime .

“A friend of mine asked me, ‘ Why are you trying to find out where this video was filmed? You’ve never been to Cameroon, ’” says Béata Biel. “And that was true. But I also knew that you could discover a lot of things through various clues visible in a video, even using the simplest free digital tools. The quizzes reinforced my belief that you can do a lot of good things with these kinds of skills.”

Although these skills are often used to document human rights violations, Quiztime itself is in no way about investigating violent or traumatic images. This, says Julia Bayer, is inherent to the project.
