1. The 2022 Groningen-Tbilisi Summer School on Global Conflict, Security and Human Rights: International Law Perspectives. This summer school will consider the situation that Eastern European countries have found themselves in after the end of the Cold War. Located strategically between Russia and Western and Middle European states, Eastern European countries are caught in a split as to where their political, military, economic and cultural future lies. With Western European states aiming for eastward expansion of the area of freedom, security and justice, many a Middle or Eastern European country has joined, or wishes to join, the NATO military alliance or the European Union. This extension of political, military and economic Western influence has left Russia bereft of its former powerhouse dominance in the region. Russia’s full-scale invasion of and current war against Ukraine shows its determination to reverse such trends. The summer school is jointly organized by the University of Groningen, Tbilisi State University, the Georgian American University and the Academician Levan Alexidze Foundation in Tbilisi, Georgia. 2. Symposium “Seeking Refuge, Finding Solidarity? Challenges and Chances for Ukrainian Protection-Seekers in Europe”. Taking into account the legal aspects of protection of Ukrainian refugees in Europe, the Law Faculties from University of Zagreb, Ruhr University Bochum, University of Lodz, University of Deusto, Bilbao and Koç University, as members of UNIC alliance, are organising the Symposium “Seeking Refuge, Finding Solidarity? Challenges and Chances for Ukrainian investor database Protection-Seekers in Europe”. The event will take place online, on 1 June, 2022 from 10am to 3pm (CET). Following the key notes of Cathryn Costello and Itamar Mann, the event will focus on the national regimes for Ukrainian protection-seekers in Europe, the role of law faculties and universities in providing support to Ukrainian students and scholars, and the right to leave and discriminatory admissions of protection-seekers. 3. Global Security Event. Dr Sophie Duroy and Dr Rishi Gulati, both presently members of the KFG Berlin-Potsdam Research Group ‘The International Rule of Law – Rise or Decline?’, will be hosting a half-day webinar on ‘Global Security and the International Rule of Law: Interdisciplinary Perspectives’ on 30 May 2022, 13.00 to 19.00 CEST. 4. Documenting Damage During Ongoing Aggression: Why, How & What Next. On 30 May 2022 (14:00-17:00 CET+1), the Professional Government Association of Ukraine, which is a community of graduates who work for the benefit of Ukraine, is organising an online-briefing entitled “Documenting Damage during Ongoing Aggression: Why, How & What Next?”. The event will concentrate on documenting damage with digital means as well as special cases of environmental and cultural heritage damage.
