An alternative citizen model on the way to becoming sustainable? Analysis.
A remedy for the sector crisis
The “Un bout du monde” system is part of the ecosystem of solutions proposed by Julia Cagé in her 2015 book “pour Sauver les Médias”. The economist, and president of the Société des Lecteurs du Monde , advocates a radical change in the economic model to restore reader confidence and media independence. This involves ending the model based on advertising revenue and including citizens in media governance.
She also criticises the system of public aid to the press, which she considers opaque and obsolete .
Advertising revenues are constantly falling, as are the number of subscribers and newsstand purchases. Julia Cagé points out a historical error by the French press in the development of its digital offering. For the economist, the free model has contributed to reducing the importance of subscriptions in the media's economic model, leading inexorably to a rise in shareholders.
