After Facebook and Instagram, a new social network Meta is in development
Called P92, according to Moneycontrol, the new platform will use a decentralized protocol and will be text-centric.
The technology used would be ActivityPub, which is Mastodon's protocol
Mark Zuckerberg's company, Meta, is india mobile database on a new social network. In addition to Facebook and Instagram, the group could soon launch a new platform codenamed P92, according to sources relayed by Moneycontrol. This new social network will have the unique feature of emphasizing text, like Twitter, and supporting a decentralized protocol, like Mastodon or BlueSky (the app recently launched by Jack Dorsey, founder and former CEO of Twitter).
Without giving details, Meta has already confirmed that this new platform is indeed under development. “We are exploring a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates. We believe there is an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates on their interests,” a Meta spokesperson was quoted as saying by Moneycontrol.
Mastodon technology on a Meta product?
More specifically, P92 would support the decentralized ActivityPub protocol , which also powers the open-source, decentralized social network Mastodon . The advantage of decentralization is the interconnectivity between services. This makes it possible to view and interact with users' posts from other servers (other than Meta's, for example). The way these decentralized networks work is often compared to email: a Gmail user can communicate with an Outlook user, or someone who hosts their emails on their own server.
P92 is reportedly being developed by the Instagram team, and according to Platformer, the work is being overseen by Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri. Moreover, Moneycontrol suggests that when P92 is launched, users will log in to the app using their Instagram account.
Decentralization, a recent trend?
It's important to note that decentralized social networks are nothing new. Mastodon, for example, has been around for years. However, following Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter, demand for alternatives to the little blue bird has increased. Mastodon, for example, has seen a significant increase in its user base. More and more existing platforms are also becoming interested in decentralization.
The Medium website, for example, has created a Mastodon server, which it offers to its members. And Tumblr announced support for ActivityPub technology in December. Now, the giant Meta is also interested in the technology. And it's not so surprising. Meta follows trends extensively, and when it sees a rival app or service doing well, it can draw inspiration from it (Snapchat Stories, TikTok videos, etc.). But for the moment, it's unclear when the P92 app will be available.
