Vodafone has only recently begun marketing 5G technology , which is now available in 15 Spanish cities. But there is still a long way to go before this new generation of mobile internet is fully deployed .

To begin with, in order to implement 5G at a national (and European) level, it is necessary to free up the 694-790 MHz band (700 MHz band) of the radio spectrum, which is currently partially occupied by DTT. The reason is that the European Union has set out to ensure a coordinated approach to the use of this band in the Community countries, as expressed in Decision (EU) 2017/899 of the European belarus phone number Parliament and of the Council of 17 May 2017.

For this reason, the Council of Ministers has approved two royal decrees today with the aim of facilitating the development of 5G networks in Spain. The first of them approves a new National Technical Plan for digital terrestrial television (DTT) and regulates the release of the Second Digital Dividend, while the second royal decree regulates the direct granting of subsidies intended to offset the costs that adaptation will entail in collective reception systems.

In order to comply with the schedule set by the European Union, the release of the Second Digital Dividend will end before June 30, 2020. The Government will call for a public tender to assign that band to operators, so that it can be available to offer 5G services before that date, although it has not specified the exact date on which operators will bid for it.
digital terrestrial television channels unchanged, but sets January 1, 2023 as the deadline for all television channels to broadcast in high definition (HD).

Granting of aid for retuning

The change in DTT frequencies will require an adaptation of reception facilities in most of the national territory, just as happened in 2015 with the process of releasing the 800 MHz band (First Digital Dividend). It will affect communities of owners, who will be eligible for aid of between €104.3 and €677.95, depending on the infrastructure previously installed. However, it will not affect individual homes, where only televisions will have to be retuned.
