Throughout the century it has been a mecca of bohemian style, the cradle of the Beats and an important center of the Q rights movement - home to the iconic Stonewall Inn. So perhaps it’s no surprise that this neighborhood is filled with cool art history. A solitary walk along Waverley Square, the misspelled tribute to Sir Walter Scott's novel Waverley, is an attempt to connect with countless writers, actors, poets and musicians.

Photo courtesy/Don’t worry. Today the meatpacking district's eponymous slaughterhouses have been replaced by trendy hot art and high-end fashion. Enjoy a free tour of the High Line, an elevated park converted from an abandoned railroad line where locals often host art exhibitions. And of course there's the Whitney Museum, which has been devoted to American art since it opened just after the turn of the century.

Be sure to check out Piazza San Marco, arguably the most popular and coolest street in the East Village. There you will find many popular restaurants, bars, shops and street vendors. Explore the city's sordid history with a visit to the American Gangster Museum, housed in a former speakeasy. If you feel you need a little redemption afterwards you can always head to St. Mark’s Basilica on the nearby Bowery. Not only does it share the same name as St. Mark's Basilica, it is also the oldest continuous place of worship in New York City.
