Operators claim that the speed of mobile Internet in their regions is not decreasing and is even increasing.

uperimposed on the constant growth of mobile Internet traffic, noted an employee of a partner company of several mobile operators. According to statistics published by the Ministry of Digital Development, mobile Internet traffic in the Russian Federation amounted to 19.6 billion GB in the first half of 2023. Compared to the same period in 2022, it increased by 16%.

Russia is stable, there is no decline, the Ministry of Digital Development reported. In the capital, the speed is growing faster, since this is the main market for the largest operators, the department noted. The bulk of all equipment is concentrated in Moscow, most of the refarming (redistribution of the frequency range in favor of 4G) takes place, which also improves the quality of communication.

"We do not see any prerequisites for a decrease in internet speed. Over the two pandemic years, when the volume of mobile traffic increased by 70% (due to the increased share of video traffic), operators strengthened their networks, a sufficient safety margin was created, and now we do not see such an increase in traffic," the Ministry of Digital Development emphasized.

The strategy for the development of the communications industry until 2035 envisages an increase in the speed of Internet access due to investments by operators in the development of infrastructure, as well as a gradual transition to domestic equipment, the department’s press service added.

Regions in touch

Megafon reported that the operator maintains leadership in this indicator both in the country as a whole and in the capital. This is possible, among other things, thanks to the telecom infrastructure modernization program, which covers all districts of Moscow, its representative claims. In the regions, the company is refarming, significantly increasing LTE coverage, he added.

— According to our data, the average speed of mobile Internet is growing both in Moscow and in the regions, — noted the representative of VimpelCom. According to him, in the regions the indicators are lower compared to Moscow, but at the same time the average values for the country are sufficient for watching high-definition video and using popular services.

— In addition to speed parameters, an important factor is the reliability of the connection, and first of all we rely on this parameter in our work. For example, the reliability of the network in Moscow has doubled compared to last year, — the operator's representative specified. According to him, it was possible to achieve an increase in speed and reliability due to the construction of new base stations, as well as refarming.

Tele2 reported that in the capital region, mobile Internet speed showed a slight increase, while in other regions of the country it remained at the same level as last year.

— In the context of growing traffic consumption, we are expanding the capacity of our network and conducting refarming in all regions, including Moscow — we are transferring 3G UMTS 2100 MHz frequencies to the LTE standard, which increases the speed and capacity of the network by an average of 25–30%, — an MTS representative told Izvestia.

One way or another, in the long term, problems with equipment and, consequently, with the speed of mobile Internet could be solved by import substitution, primarily of base stations, believes the CEO of TMT Consulting Konstantin Ankilov. The state and business are working in this direction, but it is too early to say that domestic base stations will soon appear on the market in quantities sufficient to fully cover the needs of operators, he believes.

At the end of last year, long-term forward contracts were concluded for the production and supply of Russian base stations — more than 70 thousand units by 2030, the Ministry of Digital Development reported. At the end of 2024 — beginning of 2025, the first stations will be installed on the operators' networks. From 2028, all new stations must be domestic, the department emphasized.
