This is handy for quick edits, especially if you don't have access to the more powerful image editing software on your main computer.
First, open the post with the thumbnail you want to edit. Scroll to the Featured Image field on the right and click on the image.
Click on the Featured Image While Editing the Post
This will open the WordPress media library with the selected image. On the right side, there is a panel where you can add an alt text, title, caption and description for your image.
Here you will find a preview of the image, buttons to crop and edit the image, and various other useful options to scale or crop the image.

The first thing you should look at is the Thumbnail Settings section. Here you can choose whether your changes should apply to all image sizes, just the thumbnail, or all sizes except the thumbnail.
